Naming Methods


This section contains information describing how to use the Oracle Net8 Assistant to configure naming methods. Naming refers to one of several methods used by Net8 to resolve a service name to an address when attempting to connect a client to a server. Click on any one of the following to learn more about:

Configuring Naming Methods

To specify the use of naming methods:

  1. Select Naming from the Profile pull down menu.

  2. From the Methods tab panel, click on a naming method from the Available Methods list.

  3. Use the < and > arrows to move an available naming method to and from the Selected Methods list.

  4. Use the Promote and Demote buttons to change the order of naming methods.

Net8 will attempt to make a connection using the selected naming methods in the order specified until it succeeds in establishing a connection. Click on any one of the following to learn more about:

TNSNAMES

TNSNAMES specifies Net8 to use a local names configuration file to resolve a service name to an address. You can use the Oracle Net8 Assistant to configure this file. For more information, click on "Using Service Names".

ONAMES

ONAMES specifies Net8 to use Oracle Names to resolve a service name to an address. Oracle Names is a distributed naming service developed for Oracle environments. Oracle Names stores and maintains service names and addresses in an integrated system of Names Servers. If you specify Oracle Names, Net8 will forward a client's connect request to a Names Server in an attempt to resolve the service name to an address.

IMPORTANT: If you selected Oracle Names, you may need to specify Preferred Names Servers. For more information, click on "Preferred Names Servers". You may also need to configure additional parameters for Oracle Names. For more information, click on "Oracle Names".

HOSTNAME

HOSTNAME specifies Net8 to resolve a hostname to an address. This option may be used only if all of the following are true:

CDS/NDS/NIS

CDS (Cell Directory Service), NDS (Netware Directory Service), and NIS (Network Information Service) are all native naming services supported by Net8. I you are using a native naming service, Net8 will forward the connect request to that service in an attempt to resolve the service name to an address.

IMPORTANT: If you select either CDS, NDS, or NIS, you will need to specify additional parameters. For more information, click on "External" naming methods.
