Oracle Names


This section contains information describing how to use the Oracle Net8 Assistant to configure a client to use Oracle Names.

Default Domain

The default domain is the name of the domain name space within which most client request take place. It could be the domain where the client resides, or it could be a domain from which the client requests network services often. To specify or change the default domain, enter a name in the Default Domain field. When set, the domain name will automatically be appended to any unqualified name in a connection request. No domain is specified by default.

Maximum Wait Each Attempt

Oracle Names allows you to specify how long a client will wait for a response from a Names Server before reiterating the request to the next Names Server in the Preferred Names Servers list. To configure a maximum wait time, enter a value between 1-600 seconds in the Maximum Wait Each Attempt field in the Resolution Persistence text box. The default values is operating system dependent.

Attempts Per Names Server

Oracle Names allows you to specify how many times a client will try each Names Server in the list of Preferred Names Servers before allowing the operation to fail. To configure the number of attempts per Names Server, enter a value between 1-5 in the Attempts Per Names Server field in the Resolution Persistence text box. Oracle Names will try each server once by default.

Maximum Open Connections

Oracle Names allow you to specify how many connections an Oracle Names client may have open at one time to a Names Server. To configure maximum open connections, enter a value between 3-64 in the Maximum Open Connections field in the Performance text box. Oracle Names will calculate a number of connections acceptable for most installations by default.

Initial Preallocated Requests

Oracle Names allows you to pre-allocate an initial number of messages in the client's message pool. These messages may be used for future requests to Names Servers. To configure initial preallocated requests, enter a value between 3-256 in the Initial Preallocated Requests field in the Performance text box. Oracle Names will pre-allocate 10 messages by default.
